Type 2 S + V-ed,

If she were in Hanoi now,

S + would/could + V

We would go to the cinema together.

Type 3 S + Had + P2,

If he had studied harder,

S + would/ could + have + P2

He would have passed the exam.

 

Ví dụ:

She isn’t in Nha Trang now. She can’t go swimming in the sea.

If she were in Nha Trang now, she could go swimming in the sea.

She didn’t attend last class, so she didn’t understand the lesson.

If she had attended last class, she would have understood the lesson.

 

Lưu ý:

  • Câu điều kiện loại 2 và loại 3 không có thật nên phải lùi một thì so với câu gốc.
  • Kiểm tra để tránh nhầm lẫn giữa động từ ở mệnh đề chính và mệnh đề điều kiện.

Bài tập:

  1. I don’t have his address, so I can’t give it to you.

If I had his address, I could give it to you.
  1. Because you don’t belong to a union, you can’t get a job.

If you belonged to a union, you could get a job.
  1. He won lottery ticket last year and he travelled to Europe.

If he hadn’t won lottery ticket last year, he wouldn’t have travelled to Europe.

He didn’t know the whole story, so he wasn’t so angry.

If you had spoken slowly, he could have understood you.

I was not all right because I didn’t have a map.
